Herpes Transmission Facts

The skin condition herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus. Herpes is common and recurring, as there is no cure for the condition.

  1. Types

    • There are two types of the herpes simplex virus: type 1 (oral) and type 2 (genital). According to the American Social Health Association, more than 50 percent of adults are affected by oral herpes and about 20 percent are affected by genital herpes.

    Symptoms

    • Painful cold sores or fever blisters on the face, particularly near the mouth, are symptoms of oral herpes. Painful or itching sores or ulcers near the genitals are symptoms of genital herpes.

    Oral Herpes Transmission

    • Oral herpes can be transmitted by direct contact with the infected area, such as kissing or performing oral sex on someone who has herpes.

    Genital Herpes Transmission

    • Genital herpes is transmitted through sexual contact, such as vaginal or anal sex. Condoms can reduce the risk of genital herpes transmission.

    Treatment

    • Although there is no cure for herpes, there are medications that reduce symptoms and lessen outbreaks. Doctors can prescribe a lotion, cream or antiviral medication such as acyclovir to treat symptoms.
