Definition of Gospel Music

Gospel music is often thought of as simply Christian music. Oftentimes, people do not realize that there are many different genres of gospel music. Listed below are the different types of gospel music and a brief description of each.

  1. Southern Gospel

    • Southern gospel fits the definition of country music. It usually involves harmony in parts. Some of the best-known artists in southern gospel music are the Kingsmen Quartet and the Crabb Family.

    Bluegrass Gospel

    • This is probably the least-played variety of gospel music. This type of music involves mountain or true southern instruments such as the banjo or dulcimer. Some of the most widely known bluegrass gospel artists are the Easter Brothers and Lewis Family.

    Contemporary Gospel

    • Contemporary gospel music is considered to be pop and rock music.These are songs you might find playing on a rock station as a crossover hit. Some of the most popular artists in this category are Casting Crowns, Jeremy Camp, Audio Adrenaline and the Newsboys.

    Urban Gospel

    • Urban gospel is what was once defined as black gospel music. It runs the gamut from rhythm and blues to christian rap. Some modern urban gospel artists are Kirk Franklin and LeCrae, who are the newset rap addition to urban gospel

    Modern Gospel

    • Modern gospel is a type of contemporary christian music separated by the pace of the music. Modern gospel is more of a praise and worship music with a slower rhythm. Some of the most popular modern gospel artists are Michael W. Smith and Chris Tomlin.
