Difference Between Atroven & Spiriva

Atrovent and Spiriva are used to treat flare-ups of certain respiratory diseases. Although they might have similar functions, they come in different forms and have significant differences in cost and instructions.

  1. Function

    • Spiriva is used to treat symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and you can inhale the dry powder only through a HandiHaler device. Atrovent is used to treat the symptoms of COPD as well as emphysema and bronchitis. Atrovent is available in the form of a spray or capsules.

    Considerations

    • The Institute for Rational Pharmacotherapy (IRP) states Spiriva is only slightly more effective than Atrovent. Keep in mind both medications are intended to relieve COPD symptoms and do not provide long-term prevention.

    Dosage

    • According to the IRP, Spiriva is taken once a day, while the Atrovent spray is administered up to four times a day.

    Cost

    • Spiriva is up to four times more expensive than Atrovent, according to the IRP. Since the IRP does not see any major differences between the two, Atrovent is recommended over Spiriva. The only downside is you have to use Atrovent more often throughout the day, depending upon which form you use.

    Precautions

    • Dry mouth is a common side effect of Atrovent and Spiriva, with a higher risk of about 6 percent with the latter, according to the IRP. Ask your doctor before using these medications if you have glaucoma, bladder-neck problems or prostatic hyperplasia.
