About TTY Telephones for the Deaf

Teletypewriter (TTY) telephones are devices specifically designed for the deaf. They allow hearing-impaired individuals a form of communication otherwise unavailable to them. They go by a few different names.

    Names/Abbreviations

  1. TTY is but one name for these communication devices. Other names include Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf (TDD) and text telephone.
  2. Significance

  3. TTY phones allow the deaf to communicate via telephone, enjoying the same freedom as the unimpaired to speak with friends and family. The phones also help in the event of an emergency.
  4. Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS)

  5. The Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) is made up of trained relay agents who facilitate TTY calls by completing calls and relaying messages either verbally or through messaging. (See Resources)
  6. Voice Carry Over (VCO)

  7. Voice Carry Over (VCO) is a communication method available to those who are hard-of-hearing but do not have difficulty speaking. It allows them to speak their responses to incoming text messaged replies.
  8. Hearing Carry Over (HCO)

  9. Hearing Carry Over (HCO) is for those who are unable to speak clearly but can hear without trouble. It allows them to listen to the person on the other line and respond with typed messages relayed through TRS.
