Fear of Rain in Children

The fear of rain in children, also known as ombrophobia, is an irrational fear of the rain. It is a specific type of phobia that can develop because of traumatic events like being in a devastating tornado or an inescapable hurricane. Treatment consists of behavioral therapy and medication.

  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of ombrophobia not only include the fear of rain but also common phobia reactions. According to the Mayo Clinic, these reactions include uncontrollable anxiety, inability to function, powerlessness, panic, difficulty breathing and rapid heartbeat.

    Cause

    • According to Kid's Health, it is not clear why children can develop a fear of rain. Scientists surmise that it may be in their genes. A traumatic event can also trigger this phobia.

    Risk Factors

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, risk factors for the fear of rain include age, gender and family history. Both girls and boys can develop specific phobias as early as 5 years old. If your family has a specific phobia, the child is likely to acquire the phobia as well.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for the fear of rain includes seeing a doctor. Doctors will send the child to a psychologist, therapist or psychiatrist, according to Kids Health. Sometimes, doctors can prescribe sedative medications for children to calm them from their fears.

    Coping

    • In order to cope with the fear of rain, it is important to talk with your child about his or her fears and be supportive. Also, you can teach your child breathing techniques and positive thinking to help them overcome his or her fear.
