Platform Beds Vs. Boxspring Beds

A platform bed consists of a mattress sitting directly on a box or stand. A box spring bed consists of a mattress sitting on top of a box spring. Each type is available in different sizes, materials and styles.

Size

Both platform and box spring beds accommodate different mattress sizes, such as twin, full, queen or king, and are available with headboards and footboards in varying heights, widths and styles.

Misconceptions

You cannot determine if a bed is a platform or box spring type just by looking at it. Many bed frames hide the box spring from view.

Benefits

A platform bed is available with storage in the space in which a box spring normally sits. A box spring bed accommodates a bed skirt, a decorative feature that also covers the box spring.

Tip

You can convert a box spring bed into a platform bed by having a piece of plywood cut to sit in place of the box spring. This will make the mattress sit lower in the frame, which may or may not be a desirable outcome.

Expert insight

Box springs larger than twin-size are difficult to move through narrow hallways and doorways. If you need to move a box spring into a small space, consider purchasing a split or folding box spring.
