New Jersey Salt Water Fishing Regulations
Fishing in the ocean off the coast of New Jersey can be fun and rewarding, but the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife has licensing regulations, species prohibitions and size and possession limits that must be strictly followed.
-
Licensing
-
Salt water fishing licenses are not required by New Jersey for deep sea, bay fishing or recreational surf casting. Marine licenses for crabbing, clamming and commercial purposes are required.
Fishing Methods
-
Salt water anglers can only use a rod or hand line to fish in New Jersey ocean waters. Spears and harpoons only can be used if they are completely underwater.
-
Prohibited Species
-
Fishermen are prohibited from catching Atlantic or short-nosed sturgeon, basking sharks, sand tiger sharks, big eye sand tiger sharks, whale sharks, white sharks, sea turtles and other marine mammals.
Warnings
-
Filleting fish while on the sea, without a special fillet permit, is not permitted. Harvesting, possessing and selling striped bass is prohibited. Horseshoe crabs can only be collected if you have a scientific collection permit.
Possession Limits
-
New Jersey daily possession limits per person for salt water fishermen include the following: 150 clams, 6 fluke, 25 black sea bass, 10 winter flounder, 15 bluefish and up to one bushel of blue crabs.
