What Intravenous Antibiotics Are Used for Cellulitis?

Cellulitis is a condition that involves inflammation of the skin, creating tender areas that may be painful or infected. There are a number of treatments for cellulitis, including antibiotics.

Cause

Cellulitis is most commonly caused by Streptococcus bacteria. The bacteria often enter the skin through a break such as a cut, an insect bite or a surgical incision.

Symptoms

Cellulitis tends to occur most frequently on the limbs and gives rise to redness, swelling and in some cases painful blisters. More severe symptoms such as fever, chills and headache are also possible but rare.

Treatment

The most common treatment for cellulitis is antibiotics aimed at the bacterial infection. Antibiotics may be administered either orally or intravenously.

Intravenous Antibiotics

In severe cases or during hospitalization, intravenous antibiotics are often used. These may include penicillin G, oxacillin, nafcillin and Floxapen.

Side Effects

Antibiotics sometimes produce side effects, which may include diarrhea, headaches and dizziness. Any side effects tend to be mild.
