Kidney disease or failure often affects older canines.

Also known as renal disease or failure, kidney disease (or failure) is common in older dogs. Issues that cause kidney disease or failure include infections, parasites, diseases, trauma and cancer. Owners should be aware of any changes affecting their dog, which could be a sign of renal disease or failure.

  1. Water Consumption

    • When kidney disease or failure occurs, the owner may note that the dog has increased his water consumption.

    Urination

    • With an increase in water consumption, dogs who are suffering from kidney disease or failure may also have an increase in urination.

    Appetite

    • Dogs suffering from kidney disease or failure may show a decrease in their appetite, or suffer from anorexia.

    Weight Loss

    • A decrease in appetite can lead to weight loss in a dog affected by kidney disease or failure.

    Other Symptoms

    • Additional symptoms of canine kidney disease or failure include vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, depression, pain, decrease or lack of urination, blood in the urine (hematuria), lethargy and a reluctance to move.
