Visa Requirements for South Africans to Visit Australia

Any South African wishing to travel to Australia must apply and be approved for a visa. There are several types of tourist visas, though not all are available to citizens of South Africa.

  1. Tourist Visas

    • There are four types of tourist visas, though only the Tourist Visa (subclass 676) and the Sponsored Family Visa (subclass 679) are available to South Africans.

    Tourist Visa 676

    • Tourist Visa 676 allows travelers to visit Australia for short-term, non-work purposes, including study, for a period of up to three months. It can be extended for a total stay of six to 12 months.

    Sponsored Family Visa

    • The Sponsored Family Visa allows those with an eligible relative in Australia, or with an Australian government official willing to sponsor them, for a single-entry visit for a three, six or, occasionally, 12 months stay. They may visit family and friends, engage in tourist activities or study for up to three months.

    Tourist Visa 676 Application

    • You will need the appropriate application and fees, your passport, certified copies of your birth certificate, a recent passport-sized photo, certain health and character documents, evidence of sufficient funds for your trip and evidence of leave approval if you are employed, enrollment at a college or university, if applicable, or an invitation from relatives or friends, if appropriate.

    Sponsored Family Application

    • The process for the Sponsored Family Visa is two pronged. First, the traveler completes the application, with all of the aforementioned documents. Additionally, they must provide proof that they have family and property or other significant assets to return to. The sponsoring family must complete an application as well, and show proof of citizenship.

    Submitting the Application

    • The application can usually be done online, in person or through the mail. In person, applications must be handled at the Australian High Commission, Pretoria, South Africa, while details about the online or mailing process can be found at the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.
