What Is the File Extension Iss?

Many programs utilize a type of installation software called InstallShield to add the files necessary for accessing the program on your computer. In such programs, InstallShield automatically opens when the installation file is double clicked, then uses a number of components such as Iss files to install the program.

  1. Identification

    • A file with an Iss file extension is an InstallShield Silent Response file. The Iss extension serves as a marker to your computer, allowing it to locate the necessary file quickly during the installation process.

    Location

    • You are likely to find a file with the Iss file extension inside the installation folder for a program that uses InstallShield.

    Background

    • There are two types of installation possible with an InstallShield. One is a normal installation, which causes dialogue boxes to appear throughout the installation and require your response to continue. The other is silent installations, which occur automatically with no dialogue boxes.

    Function

    • During a silent installation, the Iss file makes the responses that you would otherwise be prompted for during a normal installation. The Iss file is what allows the silent installation to proceed automatically.

    Considerations

    • Because Iss files might be necessary to uninstall a program with InstallShield, never delete an Iss file from your computer.
