Signs & Symptoms of Acid Reflux in Cats thumbnail
Acid reflux can cause severe pain to the affected cat.

In cats, acid reflux can also be referred to as gastroesophageal reflux. Acid reflux occurs when the cat is unable to prevent gastric or intestinal fluids from entering the esophagus. If left untreated, acid reflux can cause more serious problems, such as esophagitis.

  1. Vomiting

    • One of the most obvious signs of feline acid reflux is repeated vomiting or regurgitation of food. Most often, the vomiting is excessive.

    Pain

    • Pain in felines may be signified by howling or mewling, particularly when swallowing food.

    Lack of Appetite

    • With the severe pain caused by repeated episodes of acid reflux, some cats may display a lack of appetite.

    Weight Loss

    • A lack of appetite can often cause weight loss in cats. In severe cases, anorexia may result.

    Esophagitis

    • Esophagitis is a condition that is caused by repeated damage to the esophagus from acid reflux. Symptoms of esophagitis include salivation, reduced appetite, coughing, difficulties with swallowing and regurgitation of food.
