What Is a Cherry Angioma?

Cherry angiomas are an irritating type of skin growth. They often do not need treatment since the patient with the cherry angioma can live a normal life.

  1. Description

    • A cherry angioma is a skin growth or lesion that is noncancerous. Found anywhere on the body, it is bright "cherry" red in color, smooth to the touch, and no more than 1/4-inch across.

    Susceptibility

    • While the cause is unknown, the cherry angioma is often found in patients over the age of 30. Typically they are on the trunk portion of the body.

    Treatment

    • While these are just annoyances some may bleed. People who want them removed can have them excised via laser, freezing, burning, or surgery.

    Complications

    • These skin growths are harmless, but they may cause stress from the appearance of them. They may change how they look, and if they are injured they can bleed.

    Prognosis

    • These are non life-threatening benign growths that cause no harm other than occasional bleeding and some embarrassment. See your doctor if you'd like them removed.
