Colitis is an inflammation of the colon. Parasites, bacteria, or diet may cause this condition. Colitis can be treated. Call your veterinarian if you think your dog might have colitis.

  1. Metronizadole

    • Metronizadole is an anti-inflammatory drug that is sometimes used to treat colitis. The drug kills harmful organisms in the intestine, as well as reducing inflammation.

    Sulfalazine

    • This sulfa antibiotic keeps anti-inflammatory drugs intact as they move through the digestive tract to the large intestine. The drug is effective in treating colitis, but according to Dogtime.com it needs to be administered three times a day, which is difficult for some pet owners.

    Fiber

    • Veterinarians sometimes recommend adding more fiber to a dog's diet to alleviate colitis. Fiber provides nutrients for colon cells and beneficial bacteria, according to Dogtime.com.

    FOS

    • Diets containing FOS (fructooligosaccharide) carbohydrates are sometimes recommended for colitis. These carbohydrates remove disease-causing bacteria.

    Elimination Diet

    • A food allergy may be causing your dog's colitis. Giving him a diet for 8 to 10 weeks that contains nothing he normally eats can help you determine if a food allergy is causing the condition.
