Other causes of ankle pain and stiffness include cartilage chip fractures, systemic arthritis, bone spur formation, tendinitis, partial tendon tear and ankle joint instability.
Treatment

Once a diagnosis is made on what is causing the pain, the best treatment option will be chosen. Possible options include an oral anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone injections and physical therapy.
