Parts of an Angiosperm Flower
Angiosperm is the scientific name for flowering plants. This grouping includes trees, shrubs and herbaceous annuals. All of these plants produce flowers, undergo pollination and then go to seed. Angiosperm flowers have both male and female parts that are necessary for plant reproduction.

Types of Flowers

Within the plant kingdom, the more advanced plants produce flowers with male and female parts. Usually the male and female parts are contained within the same flower. These types of flowers are referred to as being hermophroditic.
Male and Female Flowers

Sometimes flowers can be either male or female, meaning the male and female organs are located on different flowers. If the male and female flowers occur on the same plant, the plant is defined as monoecious. If each plant contains either all male or all female flowers, it is considered to be dioecious.

Stamens and Anthers

The male flower parts consist of long narrow stalks called stamens. The stamens have a small head, called the anther, where pollen is produced. This anther is supported by a long vegetative growth called the filament. In most flowers the stamens surround the female reproductive organ.
The Pistil

The female flower part is called the pistil, which is usually shaped like a long narrow vase. The opening at the top is called the stigma, the long neck is called the style, and the bulbous base is the ovary, which contains the ovule.
Pollination

Pollination occurs when pollen from the male stamen is released and enters the pistil, where it fertilizes the ovule. Most often pollination occurs between different plants of the same species, although sometimes it can occur between flowers on the same plant.
Sepals and Petals

Petals are the colorful leaf-like structures that surround the male and female parts of the flower. Further protection is provided by sepals, another leaf-like part of the flower that is attached to the stem and surrounds the petals. The sepals are usually green.
