Airport Luggage Requirements

Regulations regarding luggage are determined by the Transportation Security Administration, while restrictions regarding weight and size are dictated by the airlines. Each has sole discretion to determine what is acceptable.

  1. TSA Regulations

    • The TSA's list of items prohibited from passenger luggage fall into the following categories: sharp objects, sporting goods, guns and firearms, tools, martial arts and self-defense items, explosive and flammable materials, disabling chemicals, and other dangerous items.

    Carry-On Luggage

    • Airlines tend to restrict carry-on bags to less than 40 lbs., though some might only allow bags up to 20 lbs. Bags must fit in an overhead bin or under the seat so they cannot exceed 45 to 55 inches.

    Free Luggage

    • While some airlines still allow some free luggage, this is becoming a rarity. Some charge passengers per piece, per way, with a declining rate for each bag, while others increase the rate with each bag. In either case, the latter is more prevalent.

    Check-In Luggage

    • All airlines have size and weight restrictions regarding check-in luggage. Surcharges are incurred for checking in more than two bags and/or for bags that weigh more than 50 lbs. and/or exceed 62 linear inches.

    Excess Baggage

    • Excess baggage fees are charged for more than the customary two. Airlines such as Delta, which charges $15 for the first and $25 for the second checked bag, charge $125 for the fourth and $200 for the fifth as of November 2009, regardless of weight.

    Overweight Baggage

    • Bags more than 50 lbs. will usually carry additional fees. Delta charges $90 for bags from 50 lbs. to 70 lbs. for domestic flights and $150 for international flights; bags from 71 lbs. to 100 lbs. incur additional fees, while anything over is unacceptable on all airlines.
