Male ADHD Symptoms & Treatment

ADHD, or, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, is a behavioral disorder affecting males more than females. Most research regarding symptoms and treatment have been geared toward males; in general, available literature applies to males unless otherwise indicated.

  1. Other Disorders

    • Males with ADHD are about two times more likely than females with ADHD to suffer from additional disorders, such as conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder.

    Predominantly Inattentive ADHD

    • If a person has the predominantly inattentive type of ADHD, he is easily distracted and has difficulty organizing and finishing a task, noticing details, and following instructions and conversations.

    Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive ADHD

    • This type of ADHD causes the sufferer to be restless and fidgety. He'll talk a lot and, because of impulsiveness, will interrupt others or speak inappropriately. He is also accident-prone.

    Combined ADHD

    • People with combined ADHD have symptoms divided between the two other types of ADHD.

    Motor Skills

    • According to a 2003 study conducted at the School of Psychology at Curtin University of Technology in Australia, males with ADHD have significantly worse movement ability than other males.

    Treatment

    • ADHD is most effectively treated using a two-pronged approach that uses both medicine and behavior therapy. Both stimulants and non-stimulants are used to treat ADHD.
