Education Requirements for a Spanish Interpreter

Language interpretation involves transferring the meaning of spoken words between two languages in real time. Educational requirements for language interpreters, including Spanish interpreters, are stringent.

  1. Aptitude Requirements

    • The mindset and aptitude required to become a Spanish interpreter include good concentration, public speaking skills, enunciation and voice, intellectual curiosity, high tolerance for stressful situations, high reaction speed, and adaptability to constantly changing situations.

    Language Requirements

    • Language requirements to become a Spanish interpreter include fluency and complete mastery of the active language (target) and at least a high degree of knowledge and understanding, but preferably fluency, of the passive language (source).

    Secondary Education

    • Prospective Spanish interpreters in secondary schools should take as many courses in Spanish, English, composition and comprehension as possible.

    University Education

    • Most interpreting positions require at least a university degree, while some may even require a graduate degree, although a major in Spanish is not necessarily required (only mastery of the language). Formal training in methods of interpreting is encouraged.

    Familiarity with Subject

    • A Spanish interpreter must have a high degree of familiarity with and understanding of the context in which he or she is working. For example, interpreting at the United Nations requires an in-depth understanding of diplomacy, geography, history, international relations, and current events, whereas a medical interpreter would need to understand medical terminology and ideas.
