What Is the Drug Enbrel?

Enbrel helps people with autoimmune disorders by suppressing a protein called tumor necrosis factor. This protein causes the immune system to attack the body's cells, creating unpleasant symptoms. People with autoimmune disorders have too much tumor necrosis factor in their bodies, which is why Enbrel is beneficial.

  1. History

    • Enbrel was clinically tested for more than 16 years. In 1998, Enbrel was approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

    Types

    • Enbrel is only available in the form of an injection, which is available at a doctor's office or by self-injection, though it's best to ask a health care professional for directions and recommendations before doing so. The generic name for Enbrel is etanercept.

    Function

    • Enbrel injections relieve symptoms and prevent joint damage from psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Enbrel also treats juvenile idiopathic arthritis and plaque psoriasis.

    Considerations

    • Tell your doctor if you have had tuberculosis or have had contact with anyone diagnosed with tuberculosis in the past. The dosage may need adjusting, depending on certain health conditions, so it is important to fully disclose your medical history.

    Warning

    • Enbrel may cause mild side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, stuffy or runny nose, cold symptoms and headache. Stop using Enbrel and seek emergency medical treatment if you experience sweating, fever, fatigue, chills, shortness of breath, sore throat, cough, weight loss or flu symptoms.
