Differences Between Whey Protein & Protein Powder

  1. Whey's Origins

    • Whey is a liquid by-product of cheese-making. Whey protein is naturally available in milk. (Ref. 2.)

    Whey Protein Concentrate

    • According to the USDA, dry whey protein concentrate is between 25 percent and 89.9 percent protein, and contains no more than 10-percent milk fat. (Ref. 3.)

    Whey Protein Isolates

    • Whey protein isolate contains at least 90 percent protein, and it contains less lactose than whey protein concentrate.

    Whey Protein Powders

    • Protein powders may include whey protein concentrate or whey protein isolate. Powders will also include flavorings for taste and additives that enhance post-workout recovery.

    Other Protein Powders

    • Protein powders can also be based on soy protein. Soy protein is often considered inferior to whey proteins, which are complete proteins. (Ref. 2.)
