Signs & Symptoms of Intestinal Disease in Cats thumbnail
Cats can suffer from a variety of intestinal diseases.

The intestines are long, tubular structures that connect the stomach to the anus and carry waste out of the body. There are many different intestinal diseases that can cause a variety of symptoms. Recognizing the symptoms of an intestinal issue can help the cat owner get their cat the medical attention necessary.

  1. Types

    • Types of diseases and conditions that can affect the intestines include inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), intestinal parasites (hookworms) and cancers or tumors of the intestines.

    Diarrhea

    • One of the most common symptoms of an intestinal disease is diarrhea. Diarrhea can vary in frequency and may come and go. Also, it may or may not contain blood.

    Vomiting

    • Vomiting is another common sign of an issue with the intestines. In most cases, vomiting occurs when the small intestine and the stomach are affected.

    Blood

    • With certain diseases like inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal cancer or a hookworm infestation, there may be blood present in the stool. Blood may cause the stool to appear darker than normal, or the blood may be fresh.

    Weight Loss

    • Weight loss can occur due to intestinal diseases, particularly due to cancer of the small intestines or lesions in the small intestines.
