Food for Bariatrics
Following a physician-recommended diet is important to keep the stomach from stretching out after bariatric surgery. Adhering to the diet will also help the stomach become accustomed to smaller food portions and prevent side effects while avoiding weight gain.

Liquids
-
The first foods allowed on a diet after bariatric surgery are only liquid. Broth, unsweetened juice, milk, strained cream soup and sugar-free gelatin are recommended by the Mayo Clinic.
Pureed Foods
-
Once the liquid portion of the diet is completed, pureed foods may be added. Puree lean meat, vegetables, fruits and egg whites.
-
Soft Foods
-
Soft foods will be gradually added into the diet after a few weeks of pureed food. The general rule for this phase of the post-bariatric diet, according to the Mayo Clinic, is if it can be mashed with a fork, it can be eaten.
Solid Foods
-
Typically, eight weeks after surgery, solid foods may be added into the diet. Make sure to choose foods rich in vitamins and minerals, because portion sizes are small.
Foods to Avoid
-
To prevent stomach upset, avoid eating foods with stringy textures, foods that are tough or are extremely fibrous. Other things to avoid are sodas, popcorn, nuts and seeds.
