What Are the Causes of Algae in Air Conditioners?

Algae are primitive aquatic plants that are found in most areas of the world. Algae appear as greenish slime in areas of high condensation. Moisture present in air conditioners can cause the growth of algae after time.

Types

Many types of air conditioners can become breeding grounds for algae, mold and bacteria. Window units, wall units and central air conditioning systems are equally capable of becoming infected if not cared for correctly.

Condensation

Air conditioners cause condensation to form due to the inside humidity and the difference in temperature between the air conditioner housing unit and the ambient room temperature. The amount of moisture varies depending on the climate in which it is located.

Stagnant Water

Condensation becomes a problem when it is allowed to sit for a period of time. Stagnant water provides a breeding ground for algae and other types of plants and bacteria.

Malfunction

Many air conditioners are considered self-cleaning, but may still experience stagnant water problems if clogged by debris in the lines or in the filters.

Treatment

Air conditioners should be checked regularly for standing water. Removable filters should be cleaned and replaced according to the manufacturer's directions. Once mold is detected, measures should be taken to correct the problem by removing the clog and treating the unit with an algaecide to kill the algae.
