Definition of Online Safety

The growing popularity of the Internet in recent years has brought about many concerns about online safety. Many users are concerned about the protection of information online, and others are troubled about the safety of minors browsing online.

  1. The Internet

    • The very nature of the Internet allows a great deal of information to be accessed from an individual computer. As more computers are connected, the more chances there are for dangers to arise.

    Predators

    • One aspect of online safety involves safety from malicious individuals hoping to prey on unsuspecting victims. Chatrooms and discussion forums provide ample opportunity for online predators to stalk, harass and violate individuals.

    Pornographic Material

    • Children can inadvertently access pornographic material online; online safety involves placing firewalls and safeguards in place to ensure that does not happen.

    Sensitive Information

    • Because individuals do business online, sensitive financial and personal information is available for the technically savvy computer user. Online safety involves protecting your personal data.

    Staying Safe

    • Download software to block certain sites on your computer, and only use secure and reputable websites to conduct business transactions. If you have children, constantly monitor their online activity.
