Self Treatment for Bunions

A bunion occurs when the big toe curves inward.

A bunion occurs when the big toe curves inward, leaving a lump of bone protruding at the base and side of the big toe. Although according to epodiatry.com, surgery is the only way to completely get rid of a bunion, self-treatment for bunions is recommended as a way to avoid surgery when possible.

  1. Shoes

    • Wearing correctly fitted shoes is essential for taking pressure off bunions. According to epodiatry.com, you need to wear wide, deep shoes and avoid high heel shoes.

    Arch Support

    • According to the Foot and Ankle Center of Washington, using arch support in your shoes transfers force off of the bunion. The center also recommends avoiding slippers at home and wearing sandals with arch support instead.

    Padding

    • Using padding around the bunion or between the toes can reduce pain.

    Toe Exercises

    • According to epodiatry.com, keeping the toe joint mobile helps prevent pain. One simple exercise is to grasp the big toe with one hand and move it in all directions, holding gentle stretches for 10 to 15 seconds.

    Other Suggestions

    • Wearing a bunion splint at night straightens the big toe and prevents the first and second toes from pushing against each other. To help relieve pain, you can ice the bunion for 10 minutes each night and use a topical pain reliever during the day.
