There are more than 2,500 varieties of apples. There's no way you can keep track of them all, but the most common types are fairly easy to identify.

    Red Delicious

  1. Red Delicious apples are identified by their sweet taste and dark red skin. Due to their high sugar content and soft flesh, these treats are best enjoyed raw.
  2. Granny Smith

    Granny Smith
    Granny Smith apples are popular for eating raw as well as for baking. They are easily identified by their bright green skin and sharp, tart taste.
  4. Golden Delicious

  5. Golden Delicious apples have pale yellow skin (with occasional patches of pink) and moderately sweet flesh. They are often slightly larger than other varieties.
  6. Fuji

    Fuji apple
    Fuji apples are popular for their crisp flesh and ability to hold up well when baked. They can be identified by their slightly smaller size and mostly red skin.
  8. Gala

  9. Gala apples have dark pink and light orange striping running vertically across the apple. These apples are crisp and are best eaten raw or in applesauce.

    Other types frequently found in grocery stores include Braeburn, Pink Lady, Macintosh and Jonagold. Rarer varieties usually will be accompanied by signage.
