Signs of Canine Inner Ear Infection

Dogs with floppy ears are prone to developing ear infections.

Inner ear infections can be a serious issue for dogs. If left untreated, many inner ear infections can case serious side effects including paralysis and deafness. It is important for dog owners to understand and recognize the signs of an inner ear infection.

Causes

Inner ear infections are often the result of an infection in the outer ear that was not treated. Causes of ear infections include bacterial infections, fungal infections and parasites.

Shaking

A common symptom of canine ear infections is shaking of the head in an attempt to dislodge the irritation.

Scratching

Many dogs will scratch and paw at their ears when they have an ear infection.

Balance

The balance organ is located in the inner ear, so dogs with inner ear infections may suffer from a loss of balance.

Facial Paralysis

In serious or reoccurring inner ear infections, the dog may suffer from facial paralysis. Facial paralysis may be noted by droopy eyelids or facial muscles and protrusion of the third eyelid.
