What Are the Side Effects of Prevacid?

Prevacid is the brand name of the generic prescription drug lansoprazole. Despite its effectiveness in reducing stomach acids that cause heartburn, acid reflux and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Prevacid poses a risk for side effects in some patients.

    • Potential risks of Prevacid include angina, heart attack, inflammation of your colon or colitis, gastrointestinal hemorrhages, increased blood sugar levels, gout, amnesia, convulsions, hallucinations and changes in menstruation.

    Considerations

    • Because animal studies have shown potential harm to fetal development with the use of the drug, doctors typically restrict the use of Prevacid in pregnant women to situations where there is no safe alternative to treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic.
