Life Cycle of Kidney Bean Seeds

The kidney bean itself is actually the seed of the kidney bean plant. The beans begin their lives inside a bean pod, before commencing a life cycle known as a seed-to-seed cycle. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Germination

    • After the bean has been planted and adequately watered, it takes approximately a week for it to germinate. A sprout known as the hypocotyl then begins to grow from the bean.

    Plant Growth

    • Once the hypocotyl breaks through the surface of the soil, it is exposed to sunlight. Here the processes of phototropism (growth in the direction of the light source) and photosynthesis begin. The plant continues to grow for the next six weeks before beginning the reproduction process.

    Bean Reproduction

    • During this stage, the plant grows flowers. Once the flowers are fertilized, the petals die and drop off, and the ovaries of the flower begin to grow into bean pods.

    Bean Development

    • The bean pods continue to grow until they are large and full of beans. The beans can be harvested for consumption, or allowed to continue to develop and be re-used as seeds.

    New Plant

    • After the bean pods fully mature, they dry up and split open, allowing the seeds to fall to the ground. These fallen beans in turn germinate and give life to a new bean plant.
