Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is a prescription medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is a medical condition in which men cannot get an erection or maintain an erection for the time required to engage in sexual intercourse. According to Pfizer, Viagra is prescribed more than any other oral medication to treat ED.

    Function

  1. Viagra helps men attain and keep an erection by improving blood flow to the penis.
  2. Dosing

  3. The recommended starting dose of Viagra for most men is 50 milligrams. Men should take Viagra one hour before sexual activity. The maximum daily dose of Viagra is 100 milligrams.
  4. Time Frame

  5. Viagra begins to work very quickly, and the positive effects last for as long as 4 hours in most men.
  6. Side Effects

  7. Common side effects of Viagra include facial flushing, headache and upset stomach. Sometimes, blurred vision and sensitivity to light may develop. Serious side effects include swelling, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting and vision or hearing loss.
  8. Considerations

  9. Some men may require a lower starting dose of Viagra, including men over the age of 65 years, those with serious kidney or liver disorders and men taking alpha-blocker medications.
  10. Warning

  11. Men taking nitrates should not use Viagra, and any Viagra user who experiences an erection lasting longer than 4 hours must seek medical attention immediately.
