Tylenol (acetaminophen) is an over-the-counter medication commonly used to treat minor muscle aches and pains. This medication can also be combined with opioids to relieve moderate to severe pain. An overdose of acetaminophen can cause fatal liver failure.
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Medications

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) reduce inflammation and are also analgesic. They are used to treat mild muscular pain and may be combined with opioid medicines if pain is more severe. NSAIDs may cause stomach pain and discomfort and may increase the risk of gastric ulcers.

Opioid medicines such as codeine, tramadol and dihydrocodeine are weaker opioids that may be used to treat mild pain. Side effects may include drowsiness, constipation and tolerance for the drug if it is used over a long period of time. Opioid medicines may be habit-forming.
Strong Opioid Medications

Morphine, oxycodone and fentanyl are considered strong opioids. These medicines can be used for many different types of pain, but may be habit-forming. They may be combined with acetaminophen or NSAIDs. These types of medications may be used for musculoskeletal pain, sympathetic pain and nerve pain.

Tell your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms after taking medications for pain: swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, hives, trouble breathing or wheezing. These may be symptoms of a life-threatening allergic reaction.
