What Are the Duties of a Bellboy?

Bellboys, or bellhops as they are now more commonly known, work in hotels, apartment and luxury residence buildings, and transportation vessels to take care of an array of customer-related services.

  1. Duties

    • The most common duties for bellboys include assisting incoming guests with luggage and packages, and seeing them to their hotel rooms. Bellboys also run personal errands and deliver messages for guests.

    Conditions

    • Bellboys work in fairly comfortable indoor surroundings. They are sometimes required to transport luggage and packages during inclement weather.

    Hours

    • Bellboys work an average of 35 to 48 hours a week. They might work one of three shifts, with most working during the day to accommodate more guests. Weekend hours are also required at most properties.

    Additional Income

    • In addition to an hourly rate, bellboys receive tips, which can sometimes nearly double their rate of pay. In some places, bellboys make a lower base salary to account for their tips, which often bring them well over the minimum level of income.

    Advancement Options

    • Bellboys have limited opportunity for advancement because most hotels employ only one bell captain per property. However, with some training on clerical duties, a bellboy can advance into an administrative position with the company.
