Fashion Magazine Editor Job Description
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of magazine editors is expected to increase 10 percent to 20 percent between now and 2012. Competition for fashion magazine editor is intense, and may require one to start at the bottom, and work her way up throughout a particular magazine. Because the majority of success in a magazine lies in the hands of the editor, her duties and roles may sometimes require working harder and longer hours than anyone else in the company.

The fashion editor must report to the editor-in-chief, giving him the direction that their section of the magazine will go for the year. All ideas that come from the writers, along with the fashion editor, must be first approved by the editor-in-chief.

The editors are often requested to travel to different areas of the world to keep up with the latest fashion trends. They have meetings with certain designers and must attend major fashion shows in New York, Paris and London, to name a few.

Because photos always appear next to articles within a fashion magazine, it is the responsibility of the fashion editor to create and arrange the photos in a unique manner that will capture the interest of a reader.

Whether it be in-house or freelance writers, it is the duty of the fashion editor to hire or fire writers for the magazine. A keen eye is required to make sure the writers have what it takes to write for their specific magazine.
