What Are Edelwiess Flowers?

The edelweiss flower is a native European plant that grows in alpine environments and is protected in certain parts of Europe. A cultural icon, the edelweiss is represented on such things as various currencies and commercial products, as a military symbol and in song lyrics.

  1. Classification

    • The scientific name for the edelweiss is Leontopodium alpinum. It belongs to the Asteraceae family. The name edelweiss comes from the German words meaning "noble" and "white."

    Flowers

    • The flower head of the edelweiss is composed of two to 10 small yellow flowers clustered together.

    Leaves

    • The edelweiss flower's leaves are white and fuzzy, and are located below the flower clusters. An edelweiss flower may have six to nine leaves underneath the flowers.

    Height

    • Edelweiss flowers may grow from 2 inches to 1 foot tall, but are commonly 8 inches tall.

    Considerations

    • Edelweiss flowers are a traditional folk remedy. Uses include applications for respiratory and abdominal problems such as tuberculosis, dysentery and diphtheria.
