Chicago Lakefront

The beginning and end of the famed lakefront trail along Lake Michigan in Chicago depends on which end is your starting point. There's a north terminus of the trail near the northern border of the city, as well as a southern terminus on the city's South Side.

  1. The Trail

    • The lakefront trail in Chicago runs about 20 miles on roughly a north-south course, along Lake Michigan the entire way.

    Northern Terminus

    • The northernmost point on Chicago's lakefront trail is near the Ardmore-Hollywood Beach, at the point at which W. Ardmore Avenue meets Lake Michigan. Ardmore Avenue is 5800 North, or 58 blocks north of Madison Street in downtown Chicago.

    Southern Terminus

    • The southernmost point on the lakefront trail is near the 67th Street Beach, just south of Jackson Park. The endpoint is at E. 71st Street, which is 71 blocks south of Madison Street in downtown Chicago.

    Falling Short

    • Though the lakefront trail extends most of the way down the water's edge in Chicago, there are short sections of lakefront both north and south of the trail that it doesn't traverse.

    Trail Conditions

    • The entire trail is paved and suitable for walking, jogging, inline skating, bicycling and other non-motorized activities. Parts of it can be very crowded, however, especially in the summer.
