What Is the First Visit of Chemotherapy Like?

The unknowns about chemotherapy treatment causes fear for many patients.

The word "chemotherapy" typically brings fear to cancer patients. Thoughts of hair loss and overwhelming sickness may cloud your mind as you face treatment, knowing what to expect from your first chemotherapy appointment may calm those fears.

Types

Anticancer drugs may be administered via oral medication, injection, IV or a line directly into the abdomen or spinal column, reports ChemoCare.com.

Preparation

Blood testing and a physical exam will ensure you are healthy enough for treatment. Before your appointment, eat as you normally, would and take any prescribed medication, says the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMCCC).

Delivery

The first step is preparing your body to receive the medication. The attendant will place an IV or line into the delivery site, or disinfect the skin where the injection will occur.

Time Frame

For IV or similar delivery, plan to be at the treatment center for most of the day. Nurses will make sure you have food, water, pillows and blankets. Plan for someone else to drive you home, suggests UMCCC.

Side Effects

Cancer.org says common side effects are nausea, vomiting, mouth sores and pain. Some patients experience hair loss approximately 10 to 14 days after their first chemotherapy treatment.
