Medicine for Nausea & Emesis

Nausea and vomiting (emesis) can be the result of many factors, including certain medications, chemotherapy, morning sickness, motion sickness, stomach viruses and eating bad food. Luckily, there are a number of medications that can help alleviate nausea and vomiting.

  1. Antiemetic Medications

    • Drugs that treat nausea and vomiting are known as "antiemetics" and require you to be evaluated by the physician as they are available only by prescription.

    Zofran

    • Zofran (ondansetron) is medication used to treat nausea and vomiting and is most commonly given to chemotherapy-induced nausea, but can be prescribed for other types of nausea as well. It is available in tablets and orally disintegrating tablets and as an injection.

    Phenergan

    • Phenergan (promethazine) is another common antiemetic. It is available in both tablets and injections.

    Motion-Sickness Pills

    • Dramamine and meclizine (i.e., Bonin) are two medications available without a prescription and are primarily used to prevent nausea caused from traveling and motion.

    Over-the-Counter Products

    • Pepto-Bismol and Emetrol are common over-the-counter products that treat nausea.

    Natural

    • Ginger is another, natural method for curing and preventing nausea and is available as a capsule.
