Cerebral Palsy Dopamine Treatment

Dopamine treatment, which utilizes dopaminergic drugs to treat motor function abnormalities, is commonly used for Parkinson's disease patients. However, dopamine treatment can also be used to treat cerebral palsy (C.P.).

  1. Cerebral Palsy

    • Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that usually develops during pregnancy or as a result of birthing complications. Dystonia (twisting or jerking movements) is a side effect of C.P. that can be treated with dopamine.

    Types

    • Sinernet and Artane are the most commonly prescribed dopaminergic drugs used in dopamine treatment of cerebral palsy.

    Process

    • Dopamine treatment works by blocking nerve signals that cause uncontrollable muscle spasms, which can be debilitating.

    Benefits

    • By relieving uncontrollable muscle spasms, dopamine treatment enables C.P. patients to have greater physical abilities. Dopamine treatment helps to improve gross motor skills, such as walking.

    Warning

    • No extensive studies have been done on using dopamine treatment for cerebral palsy. However, dopamine treatment has relieved similar symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease. Talk to your doctor to decide if you are a good candidate for dopamine treatment.
