What Is a Sawbuck?

A sawbuck can hold logs while you saw them.

A sawbuck is a type of sawhorse with a pair of crossed legs at each end. The tops of the legs extend above a vertical crossbar to hold the material you are sawing. This simple device provides a stable framework for cutting logs, long limbs or oddly shaped wood.

  1. Use

    • You can use a sawbuck with a handsaw or chainsaw to cut wood for a fireplace or wood stove. Using one while camping makes it easier and safer to saw wood for your campfire.

    Design

    • The crossbar attaches on each end where the legs cross, and the wood you are sawing rests in the notch at the top of each "X" formed by the legs. Some sawbucks have other pieces for added stability or capacity.

    Construction

    • You can build a sawbuck out of two-by-four pieces of wood. You also can make one out of logs or other material that you find in the field while camping.

    Warning

    • To avoid injuries, build a sawbuck out of material that is heavy enough to prevent tipping while you are cutting. This also will help you deal with kickback from a chainsaw.

    Fun Fact

    • The term "sawbuck" is also slang for a U.S. $10 bill. According to Randomhouse.com, this is because the notes once contained the Roman numeral "X," which resembles the crossed legs of a wooden sawbuck.
