Heparin Vs. Lovenox

Heparin and Lovenox (enoxaparin) are anticoagulants used to prevent blood clots. Heparin is not used to treat existing clots, but Lovenox can be used for that purpose.

  1. Available Forms

    • Heparin is available only by injection, but Lovenox is available as tablets and as an injectable.

    Heparin's Side Effects

    • Heparin may cause irritation, pain, redness and swelling at the injection site.

    Heparin's Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects include any irregular bleeding problems such as easy bruising, nose bleeds, bloody stools (that look like tar) or blood in the urine.

    Side Effects of Lovenox

    • Nausea, diarrhea, swelling and irregular bleeding are the most common side effects with Lovenox therapy. Less common side effects can cause liver tests to be elevated. It can also cause pain and irritation at the injection site.

    Serious Side Effects of Lovenox

    • These include bleeding that won't stop, pale skin, easy bruising, unusual weakness, swelling, sudden numbness or weakness, headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech or balance, pain or swelling in one or both legs, cough, chest pain or trouble breathing.
