Why Have I Got Low Levels of HCG?

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is the hormone produced by the body when pregnant. Both blood- and urine-based pregnancy tests measure levels of hCG. Low levels of hCG may be a sign of a number of situations.

  1. Late Ovulaton

    • A low level of hCG may mean that ovulation occurred later than expected. Since sperm can survive for up to 72 hours, this means that conception may have occurred later than originally assumed.

    Late Implantation

    • Implantation can occur as soon as seven days after ovulation but may take as many as 12 days to complete, resulting in less hCG being present.

    Residual Trigger

    • If a trigger shot of hCG is used to induce ovulation, low hCG may mean this trigger is still present in the blood or urine when a woman has not conceived.

    Ectopic Pregnancy

    • Low levels of hCG can also indicate an ectopic pregnancy. This is a dangerous condition where the egg implants in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus and should be monitored by a doctor.

    Early Miscarriage

    • Unfortunately, low hCG levels can also be a sign of an early miscarriage. Levels that do not rise as expected may indicate a blighted ovum or other abnormality, which will cause the termination of the pregnancy.
