What Are the Protonix Medication Side Effects?

Protonix is a medication from the class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It stops acid from being formed in the stomach. Protonix is used to treat stomach and throat problems.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • Some common side effects of Protonix are gas, insomnia, diarrhea, headache, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. If these symptoms continue or get worse, call your doctor.

    Unlikely Side Effects

    • Some unlikely side effects are increased urination, increased thirst and confusion. These are signs of raised blood sugar. Call your doctor if these symptoms occur.

    Highly Unlikely Serious Side Effects

    • Some highly unlikely effects are weakness, tingling and numbness in hands and feet, and a sore tongue, signs of vitamin B12 deficiency. Call your doctor if you experience these symptoms.

    Allergic Side Effects

    • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include itching, swelling, shortness of breath, rash and dizziness. Call your doctor if any of these occur.

    Precautions

    • If you have liver disease or uncontrolled diabetes, inform your doctor before taking this medicine. Protonix should also not be taken if you are nursing and only used with pregnancy if necessary.
