Church leaders do many things to help a local church congregation run smoothly. Leaders range from bishops, who oversee a group of churches in a local area, to associate pastors, who assist senior pastors in their daily duties.

  1. Budget

    • Within each church organization, one or more leaders with decision-making responsibilities will allocate the budget to meet needs such as lease payments, electricity, and payroll.

    Training

    • Church leaders will spend time training staff that will directly report to them. Those staff members are trained in all aspects of running a church, such as musical procedures, counseling and other protocols.

    Teaching

    • Leaders are also responsible for putting together teachings and sermons on a regular basis. They spend much time studying various religious texts to do this.

    Accountability

    • Leaders are required to maintain accountability to both a board of directors and to a congregation for their decision-making in all areas they are responsible for. They regularly fill out various reports.

    Counseling

    • Church leaders will counsel members of the congregation when needed. They'll have experience in being able to work with more serious problems such as cases involving marriages on the brink of divorce or scars from abuse. Counseling also involves working with self-esteem issues and general spiritual guidance.
