The History of Sony

Sony Computer Entertainment is a subsidiary of Sony, a Japanese-based electronics company that is one of the world's biggest media conglomerates. It is best known for its video game hardware.

  1. Foundation

    • The reason for the founding of Sony Computer Entertainment can be traced to as early as 1988, when Sony almost teamed up with Nintendo to work on a CD-ROM-based console. Eventually going on its own, the resulting hardware--the PlayStation--was demonstrated to European and American developers in late 1993 and early 1994. Sony Computer Entertainment was then founded in May 1994.

    PlayStation

    • The PlayStation--later abbreviated as PSOne or PS1--was launched in 1995. Within three years, it was the preeminent video game console of its generation, achieving worldwide sales of 40 million.

    PlayStation 2

    • The PlayStation 2 (PS2), was even more successful soon after availability in 2000. Surpassing Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's Xbox, the PS2 is the best-selling console in history.

    PlayStation 3

    • In third place behind Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 (PS3) has not been as successful as its two predecessors. But it is the gaming console with a Blu-ray player.

    PSP

    • Sony Computer Entertainment also got into hand-held gaming consoles. The PSP, available worldwide by the end of 2005, competes with its Nintendo counterpart, the DS.
