The reason for the founding of Sony Computer Entertainment can be traced to as early as 1988, when Sony almost teamed up with Nintendo to work on a CD-ROM-based console. Eventually going on its own, the resulting hardware--the PlayStation--was demonstrated to European and American developers in late 1993 and early 1994. Sony Computer Entertainment was then founded in May 1994.
