Humira as a Psoriasis Treatment

Humira (adlimumab) is a prescription medication available for treatment of psoriasis. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes red, scaly patches on the skin.

  1. Dosing

    • Humira is taken by injection under the skin. It is available either as a single dose pen or prefilled syringe.

    Function

    • Humira is classified as a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker. TNF is a protein that is responsible for the development of psoriasis.

    Warnings

    • Humira may lower immune system functioning, which can lead to an increase in susceptibility to serious infections, such as tuberculosis or infections caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. Discuss any signs or symptoms of an infection with your physician immediately.

    Side Effects

    • Potential side effects include numbness, tingling, vision changes, muscle weakness, dizziness, swelling, bruising, pale skin and skin rash. If any these symptoms develop, contact your physician to discuss whether it may be a sign or an allergic reaction or a more serious medical problem.

    Treatment

    • Other treatment options are available that may be used instead of or in conjunction with Humira for treating psoriasis. These include medications applied to the skin (topical medications), phototherapy and systemic medications (i.e., cyclosporine, methotrexate, acitretin)
