Information on Obtaining Papyrus Paper

Papyrus paper, which is made from the stalks of the papyrus plant, was invented in Ancient Egypt sometime around 4,000 B.C. Papyrus is still a popular drawing surface for artists because of its superb mechanical strength.

  1. Derivation

    • The English word "paper" actually comes from the Egyptian word "papyrus."

    Papyrus Use

    • Widespread use of papyrus ended sometime around the 11th century A.D. However, papyrus is still manufactured the traditional way by many companies and craftspeople.

    Traditional Production

    • The traditional method of making papyrus is by cutting the papyrus reeds into strips, moistening them and placing them in a "crosshatched" pattern, pressing them together, applying pressure, and, finally, drying the sheets to create actual paper.

    Obtaining Authentic Papyrus

    • Companies such as Dick Blick Art Materials and the King Tut Shop offer single sheets or bulk packages of papyrus paper in a variety of shades and textures. Paper can be ordered online, and some manufacturers offer discounts for teachers.

    Making Your Own Papyrus

    • Another method of obtaining papyrus is by making it yourself. You can find instructions and even kits for papyrus making online.
