How Does Living in Mexico Effect Us Citizenship?

Many people move to border towns in Mexico and commute to their jobs crossing the border daily. Some are concerned about the effects of living in a different country on their U.S. citizenship.

  1. Definitions

    • Citizenship includes the responsibility to pay taxes, vote and serve in the military if needed. The country has a responsibility to provide opportunity for the citizen to pursue his own life, liberty and happiness within its borders.

    FM3

    • An FM-3 permit allows a person to live and work in Mexico for one year at a time. This gives a U.S. citizen residency rights and has no effect on U.S. citizenship.

    FM2 Nonlucrative

    • An FM2 permit allows an immigrant to only live in Mexico for a year at a time. After a five-year renewal, the resident can apply for Mexican citizenship without changing nationality.

    FM2 Lucrative

    • An FM2 permit can designate specific activities that can be done for pay. The resident can work and live for five years with this visa leading to full citizenship after the fifth renewal.

    Dual Citizenship

    • Mexico has an open policy toward dual citizenship. Gaining U.S. citizenship has no effect on Mexican citizenship. The U.S. tolerates dual citizenship but discourages people from actively pursuing a foreign nationality. U.S. citizens who are born abroad or who marry a citizen of another country are not in danger of losing their U.S. citizenship.
