What Are the Worst Side Effects of Celebrex?

Celebrex is an anti-inflammatory medication prescribed to treat pain from inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. There have been reports of serious side effects as a result of using Celebrex.

  1. Minor Side Effects

    • Celebrex has been associated with minor side effects such as constipation, gas, diarrhea, headache, heartburn, nausea, sore throat and nasal congestion.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following severe reactions to Celebrex: bloody or black stools; increase or decrease in the amount of urine produced; chest pain; confusion; dark urine; depression; fainting; fast heartbeat; fever; chills; sore throat; hearing loss; changes in mood; arm or leg numbness; weakness on one side of the body; blistered or peeling skin; seizures; ringing in the ears; severe headache; dizziness; persistent stomach pain; nausea; severe vomiting; shortness of breath; sudden weight gain; swelling of hands, feet or legs; unusual bruising or bleeding; joint pain; speech or vision changes; vomit that looks like coffee grounds; or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

    Gastrointestinal Side Effects

    • Five out of 10 deaths that were reported in patients taking Celebrex were the result of stomach ulcers or bleeding ulcers. The other deaths were the result of kidney disease, heart attack and drug interaction.

    Cardiovascular Side Effects

    • Cardiovascular side effects include high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, pulmonary embolism, peripheral gangrene, angina, coronary artery disorder, myocardial infarction, palpitation, tachycardia and thrombophlebitis.

    Nervous System Side Effects

    • Side effects of Celebrex that affect the nervous system are headaches, vertigo, dizziness, migraine, neuralgia, neuropathy, paresthesia and ataxia.

    Warning

    • It is important to contact your doctor if you experience hives, rash, wheezing, swelling of the lips, throat or tongue or have difficulty breathing. Any of these could be a sign of a life-threatening allergic reaction that could require emergency medical treatment.
