What is Better for Fighting: Boxing or Kickboxing?
Both boxing and kickboxing have carved out successful niches in the fight world. When comparing the two, kickboxing is the more effective for fighting simply because it uses more strikes that take advantages of long- and short-range distances.

Types
-
While there is one form of boxing, there are several forms of kickboxing that were created in different parts of the world. American kickboxing comes from the United States and is similar to karate. International rules kickboxing is popular in Europe. Muay thai kickboxing is the national sport of Thailand.
Features
-
While boxing only involves punches, different forms of kickboxing allow for different strikes. International rules kickboxing allows for kicks to the thigh. Muay thai allows for knee and elbows strikes, both effective for fighting in close range.
-
Defense
-
Defense in boxing relies primarily on head movement and causing the other person to miss. Defense in kickboxing relies on checking and absorbing strikes. An example is bringing your arm over the side of your head and turning in to deflect a blow with your shoulder.
Considerations
-
Throwing a kick requires significantly more energy and practice than throwing a punch. There are dozens of kicks and only several punches. Some kicks, such as the roundhouse, require you to pivot on the balls of your front foot and spin your hips around. Once a kick is thrown, always return the kicking leg to its starting position.
Boxing or Kickboxing
-
While it requires a greater knowledge of different strikes, kickboxing is the more effective because of its versatility. While using the same punches as boxing, kickboxing also takes advantage of strikes from a distance with kicks and close-range striking with knees and elbows.
